THE UNDISPUTED CREATOR & FOUNDER OF HIP HOP MUSIC - lays it all on the line...

by Kenny Beck

(Los Angeles)

Lays it all on the line...

The who, what, where, when, why and how Hip Hop Music was created in the first place...

After 26 years, it is now time to reveal all the truth behind Hip Hop music and it's importance to the the entire entertainment industry - worldwide...

Apparently you have some sort of an inkling that Hip Hop and Rap are two distinct different kinds of music. In order to lay claim to the title "undisputed creator & founder of music, my evidence must be pretty solid and sound. My sense of reasoning, simple and the time frame in which all of this occurs is beyond question. The who, is quite simple to, Kenny Beck, producer of KRS One's (self proclaimed, Hip Hop prognosticator's) first record, "Success is the Word" - 12:41, on Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records (out of New York). Actually, "Success... was only a "test floater" for what would actually become "Hip Hop's very first record - "2 The Limit" a bumping little track featuring the true, first diva of Hip Hop - Octavia, Pow Wow Records US, Cool Tempo Records/Chrysalis (UK). Now this may all sound a bit strong so perhaps you are due an in depth explanation to alleviate any stress you may now be experiencing. I note "stress" because ever since it was created and I have heard people "try to explain "Hip Hop Music" to me, no one has. How about you, has anyone ever given you a real, well reasoned explanation as to exactly what Hip Hop music was. It would be news to me if they could, really - From Jay Z to LL to Mephisto's Russell Simmons and Puff Daddy aka Puffy aka...

Hip Hop for example is a - rap beat with an R&B song (or singer) doing their thing over top of it. And ACTUALLY, the song that is most often recognized as being the first true Hip Hop song is "2 The Limit" by Octavia - on Pow Wow Records. It took us almost 6 months to get that record played on radio and that wasn't even in New York. It was played by a pioneering DJ out of Philly by the who larger than life - radio jock, Joseph "Butterball" Tamburro, an Italian/American. He stuck with that damn record and so unfold the fundamentals that changed the current state of music being played at that time; (songs like "Headlights" and other straight R&B and rap kind of fare). Perhaps there was nothing out there like "2 the Limit". It paved the way for the floodgates to open with songs like "Casanova" (by Levert) following in it's footsteps. True Hip Hop aficionado's and purist will now know the whole story, which was first brought to my attention by KID from Kid N Play. One night 1989 or so, when I was going to a club, Paradise 24 in Hollywood, KID got out of a limo with Mike Tyson, Andre Harrell and somebody else in it and excitedly came up to me and said something like "Oh My God", that's Kenny Beck. All the cat's began heaping praise on me as the cat that made them all get rich with this music changing tune. It really was quite nice getting this kind of recognition from some of my top peers. because when all these things were going down, I was in Europe once again trying to break new ground. Very proud moment indeed.

I always thought it was so hilarious that Teddy Riley wanted to change my "Hip Hop styled music and put his own claim on it as the New Jack Swing. No, it was never New JACK but HIP HOP all along (probably the reason New Jack only got swallowed up by Hip Hop and not the reverse - an admirable effort though.

To a fan - I may want to write a little piece in the film featuring you and how you've stirred these emotions in me, that I had just assumed were left dead and dormant. There are many stories to tell about all of this. Is anybody even listening? Does anybody really care anymore? Apparently so. It's funny how one thing begets another, begets another....

And now the final and only explanation you will ever need to explain what Hip Hop Music is. Ever notice when you ask someone to explain Hip Hop Music to you they never come with a clear, concise and definitive answer. It almost inevitably winds up with the interjection of Hip Hop Culture infused into it. Truth is, Hip Hop Culture existed long before hIP hOP mUSIC did. Then it was all simply known as rap, but a funny thing happened when rap came to somewhat of a stand still. Rappers could not sing and though they wanted to challenge the prevailing standard of playing R&B music on ("Black (not urban radio stations), while these stations absolutely refused to play any kind of rap at all for such an inordinately long time, something had to give.

Enter Dougie Fresh and his "killer" rap track "The Show" (6 minutes Dougie Fresh your on). That was enough to spark the fire Beck would need to fuse both genre's of music into one cohesive, combination which would brand its huge imprint on many cultures throughout the world. It also gave New York radio (home of rap and Hip Hop) the impetus to start playing rap music, since rap had sat there like ticking time bomb; waiting to explode in a frenzied melee, dash for "bling and glory". Hip Hop is the combination of a rap music beat (very distinctive), an R&B song (not country - hey now, there's a novel twist), with a bad-ass R&B singer (initially Black-only), pumping their lungs out.

By using a similar rap beat to "the show" and infusing the element of a good R&B song, while capturing the phenomenal essence of one of the most sought after young divas on two continents (Octavia), the stage was set for the identifying, crowning achievement that is now known as - Hip Hop Music. If you go to my http://Superstarcase.com website now and look down the column on the left hand side for the link: Hip Hop vs Rap. I think what you'll see there is quite eye opening!

The next piece in this multiple-part series lays out how Hip Hop Music portends to be the great saving grace of the global entertainment industry, with it's influence being extended by it's naturally formulated, sibling associate - Superstarcase.

Have a pleasant evening.
